Schmollers Jahrbuch, also known as the Journal of Applied Social Science Studies, is a peer-reviewed journal for the social sciences. It comprises an annual number of 600 pages and contains articles in both German and English. Schmollers Jahrbuch serves as forum for interdisciplinary research and is open especially towards applied works or works pertaining to policy advice. Empirical analyses are particularly welcome, but so are theoretical approaches that deal with questions of application. Lastly, given the increasing relevance of European politics, articles concerned with European issues also suit the journals profile.
Especially for economists, it is important to note that the journal has been included in the “Handelsblatt Ranking” for economic journals since 2010. Although there are 270 economic journals ranked higher than Schmollers Jahrbuch, there are more than 800 journals that rank lower. With a Handelsblatt impact factor of 0.1, the journal is ranked higher than many other German-speaking journals with a comparably long tradition, such as "Jahrbücher für Nationalökonomie und Statistik", "Allgemeines Statistisches Archiv" or "Schweizerische Zeitschrift für Volkswirtschaft und Statistik". “Applied Economics Quarterly (Konjunkturpolitik)” and the relatively new "Perspektiven der Wirtschaftspolitik" also rank behind Schmollers Jahrbuch.
A special issue covering the results of a symposium on questions of data is published every two years. In the years between, a special issue covers the proceedings of the International User Meeting of the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP).
A key section of the journal is “European Data Watch”. This section includes documentation and discussions of data sources that are of particular interest to empirical researchers in the social sciences. The aim of articles published in this section is to describe the information contained in the data sources, to give examples for possible research questions and to inform potential users about means of access to these data, whether for teaching or research.
Schmollers Jahrbuch is published with the friendly support of the German Data Forum (RatSWD).
